COMPA Works With OASAS on Low
Threshold Pilot
COMPA has long advocated for developing a pilot project to test the concept of Low Threshold Treatment. We have known for some time that approximately 80% of the chronic abusers of opiate drugs in New York do not seek any kind of treatment for their addiction. We believe that part of the reason for this is that many potential patients find the existing available treatment too rigid, and too unwelcoming. The mandates of the treatment system seem overwhelming to many potential patients and therefore they delay and resist entering treatment. In an effort to overcome this barrier OASAS has agreed to study the idea of pilot testing “low threshold” treatment. Initially any pilot would need to be limited to clinics that are able to medicate seven days a week. Soon, all “seven-day” OTP clinics in New York will receive a joint letter from OASAS and COMPA inviting them to become part of this planning workgroup, with a possible pilot to follow. For more details see a copy of the attached joint letter by clicking here. In addition, any program not currently open seven days a week, but which might consider doing so in order to participate in the pilot should contact Sharon Davis at OASAS by calling 646-728-4669 or by writing to sharondavis@oasas.state.ny.us. |
